October 8, 2025, The Bronx, NY. CitySquash celebrates the Grand Opening of the Julian H. Robertson Jr. CitySquash Center. With the new building and the continued partnership with Fordham University, CitySquash begins the process of expanding to double the number of students served. (The following comments were taken from the CitySquash Grand Opening Press Release.)

A dream becomes reality in the Bronx, after years of planning and millions of dollars of fundraising. The Julian H. Robertson Jr CitySquash Center, named for the hedge fund giant, opens at 2410 Lorillard Place with the aim of serving 500 Bronx students a year. The CitySquash after-school youth enrichment program was founded in the Bronx in 2002 and has been supporting Bronx youth for more than twenty years – finally, they have a permanent home.
CitySquash uses the racquet sport of squash to help talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds fulfil their academic, athletic and personal potential, with the goal of graduating from college. The $14M purpose-built building will be a squash and community center, providing CitySquash students with brand new courts and a place to study on their doorstep. Local schools will be able to use the facility and learn squash as part of their gym curriculum. Squash is an Olympic sport for the first time at the 2028 LA games, and their new center will help build enthusiasm for this compelling racquet pursuit.
This new building is an investment in the health and the future of Bronx youth, who are growing up in the New York City borough with the highest poverty rate and the highest rates of diabetes and asthma. Currently, 200 Bronx students from 3rd-12th grade are enrolled in the program, receiving 3-5 hours a week of homework help and tutoring and playing 2-6 hours of squash. The Julian H. Robertson Jr CitySquash Center will allow them to more than double the number of students they serve, from 200-500. CitySquash oversees the high school and college application process for their students – 95% of CitySquash’s 170 high school graduates have gone on to college. 100% of CitySquash high school students graduate from high school compared to 78% of Bronx students.
Over 200 families supported this $14M project, with the lead gift coming from the Robertson family in the wake of Covid, when CitySquash did not have any access to courts at their partner institutions. The gift was made in honor of the life and legacy of the late hedge fund titan Julian H. Robertson Jr. Julian developed a passion for the sport of squash while watching his Brooklyn based grandchildren play over the last decade.
